Food inflation in Bangladesh escalated to 13.8% in November, a sharp increase from October’s 12.66%, according to the latest data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Thursday (5 December).
This surge in food prices has further driven up the general inflation rate, which rose to 11.38% in November compared to 10.87% in October.
Bangladesh previously recorded its highest food inflation rate in over a decade in July 2024, reaching 14.10%, marking the steepest rise since 2013.
For perspective, during the same period last year, the inflation rate stood significantly lower at 9.89%, highlighting the intensifying economic pressures faced by households across the nation.
The BBS data also indicated a slight improvement in wage rates, which edged up to 8.10% in November from 8.07% in October.
However, this marginal increase does little to offset the impact of rising inflation on disposable incomes.
The continuous rise in both food and general inflation underscores the financial strain on citizens, particularly in a year marked by economic challenges and soaring costs of living.
