Ekushey Padak-winning television and theatre actor Jamal Uddin Hossain passed away at the age of 81 early this morning in Calgary, Canada.

He will be laid to rest on Saturday after Zuhr prayers in Calgary.

Jamal Uddin, who had been living in the United States for an extended period, was visiting his son in Canada when he fell ill a few days ago. He was admitted to a hospital, where it was confirmed that he had contracted pneumonia.

A revered figure in the Bangladeshi theatre scene, Jamal Uddin was associated with the renowned stage drama organisation Nagorik Natya Sampradaya for many years. 

Jamal Uddin leaves behind a family deeply involved in education and the arts. His son, Tashfin Hossain, is a university professor in Canada, and his daughter lives in the United States.

Born on 14 October 1943, Jamal Uddin Hossain was known for his significant contributions to theatre in Dhaka. Some of the notable plays he directed include Chand Baniker Pala, Khachar Bhitor Achin Pakhi, Raja Rani, Bibi Shaheb, and Jugolbondi.
