On 24 August 1991, the Ukrainian parliament declared the independence of Ukraine from the Soviet Union, marking a significant turning point in the dissolution of the USSR.

The declaration came in the wake of a failed coup attempt in Moscow, which weakened Soviet authority across its republics.

Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (parliament) overwhelmingly voted in favor of independence, responding to the growing nationalistic sentiment and desire for self-determination among the Ukrainian people.

The declaration asserted Ukraine's sovereignty and initiated the process of establishing a democratic and independent state.

Ukraine's declaration played a crucial role in accelerating the collapse of the Soviet Union, which formally dissolved later that year in December.
