Border guards said on Friday that they detained S.M. Amjad Hossain, former chairman of South Bangla Agricultural and Commerce Bank, while he was attempting to illegally cross into India through Satkhira's Bhomra border.

Amjad, along with Barishal city Awami League member Nirob Hossain, also known as Khora Tutul, was detained on Thursday night, according to the BGB.

Tutul holds the position of Industries and Commerce Secretary in the Barishal unit of the party.

Lt. Col. Ashraful Haque, commanding officer of the BGB's 33rd Battalion in Satkhira, confirmed the incident, stating that they had received information about individuals accused of terrorism, drug trafficking, extortion, corruption, and other criminal activities who might try to flee to India through the Bhomra immigration checkpoint.

As a result, security measures at the border were tightened.

Nirob was detained as he was about to cross into India, followed by the detention of Amjad Hossain later in the afternoon, Lt. Col. Haque said.

Amjad is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for accumulating assets worth hundreds of crores of taka, he added, noting that his assets include multiple properties in the United States, as well as significant wealth stashed in Belgium, France, Singapore, Russia, and India.
