At least seven people, including three members of a family, were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-powered autorickshaw in Mymensingh's Tarakanda area on Friday (16 February).
Several have been injured in the accident that took place around 11am, said Mymensingh Sadar Police Station Inspector (SI) Harunur Rashid.
He said a bus of Adil Paribahan was travelling from Dhaka to Sherpur; as it reached the Alalpur area, it collided head-on with a CNG-powered autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
Seven people including the auto-rickshaw driver were killed on the spot and the death toll may increase, the SI added.
The fire service recovered the bodies from the spot.
So far, four of the deceased have been identified. They are Bablu Ahmed, 45, of Ashabat village of Rambhadrapur in Phulpur upazila of the district, his wife Sheela Akter, 35, their son Md Sadman, 7 and autorickshaw driver Alamin Hossain, 25, of Phulpur upazila.
Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station OC (Investigation) Anwar Hossain said the bus and autorickshaw involved in the accident have been seized.
“Traffic is normal on the highway. Legal action will be taken over the incident,” he added.
In this regard, Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Didar Mohammad Maksud Alam Chowdhury said, “Tk20,000 will be given for the burial of the deceased. A committee will be formed to investigate the incident.”
