The police have detained Saidul Karim Mintu, the general secretary of the Jhenaidah District Awami League, on suspicion of being involved in the murder of MP Anwarul Azim Anar.
Mintu was apprehended in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area around 4:00pm today (11 June), confirms police officials from Wari Division and Dhanmondi Detective Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
A source within the Detective Police said that Mintu had regular contact with Akhtaruzzaman Shahin.
Following his detention, authorities are investigating the broader context of his involvement.
Mintu has been taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office for interrogation as the investigation continues.
Reacting to the development, Shafiqul Islam Apu, president of the Jhenaidah District Awami League, said, "We have heard rumours about the detention of our leader. We demand exemplary punishment for those involved in the murder of our popular MP Anar."
Meanwhile, DB Chief Harun said today, "Significant progress has been made in the investigation of the murder case of MP Anwarul Azim Anar from the Jhenaidah-4 constituency. We are conducting a thorough investigation, considering all aspects.
