Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday (7 June) said containing the inflation is a big challenge for the government now as Bangladesh is not safe from the current global economic situation.

“Now we’ve a big challenge on how to bring this inflation under control,” she said.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina made this remark while chairing a meeting of AL Advisory Council at her official residence Ganabhaban here in the evening.

She said when her party formed the government in 2009, the inflation was above 12 percent and the reserve of foreign currency was less than US$ one billion.

“But now we have to control inflation,” she said, adding that her government has already introduced family cards for the limited-income people (so that they can purchase several essential commodities at fair prices) and is providing food to those who are extremely poor.

The PM said there is no doubt that Bangladesh is now a changed country. “The socioeconomic condition of the people of Bangladesh has uplifted,” she said.

Though Bangladesh is not spared from the brunts of the worldwide economic recession-like condition caused by Russia-Ukraine war, economic sanction and counter-sanction and Gaza genocide, Bangladesh has successfully been maintaining the progress it made under the criterias of graduation as a developing country from a Least developed country, she added.

She said the government has placed the proposed national budget for 2024-2025 fiscal year in Parliament considering the current global situation.

"Though this budget is not so big, we’ve formulated the budget to ensure the country's continued journey towards development," she said, adding that the budget has given special focus on inflation, health and education.

Referring to the 12th parliamentary election results, the PM said her party has been able to uphold public trust.

“We’ve been able to retain public trust. There were many conspiracies so that the election won’t be held,” she added.
