Netflix has announced that a Peaky Blinders film is in the works, with Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby.

The news was confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday night, accompanied by a photograph of the script.

Murphy, who will also co-produce the film, said, "This is one for the fans."

The BBC drama, which ran for six series from 2013 to 2022, followed the lives of Birmingham gangsters in the early 20th century. Murphy starred as the lead character throughout the show's run. "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me," he said.

The film will reunite Murphy with creator Steven Knight and director Tom Harper.

Fans have expressed their excitement on social media. "Tommy Shelby always has a way of making us glued to our screens," one user commented.

Another wrote, "Can't wait for more Tommy Shelby action! Peaky Blinders on Netflix - it just doesn't get any better than that."

Peaky Blinders first aired on BBC Two in September 2013, moving to BBC One for its fifth series in 2019.

The show has garnered several awards, including a Bafta for best drama series in 2018.

Creator Knight promised the film would be an "explosive chapter" in the Peaky Blinders story, describing it as "full-on Peaky Blinders at war."

Director Harper expressed his excitement about reuniting with the cast and crew for the film, calling the show a "story about family."

Murphy, who gained fame in 28 Days Later and Peaky Blinders, recently won an Academy Award for his role in Oppenheimer, becoming the first Irish-born actor to win best actor at the Oscars.

The film is set to go into production later this year.
