A Noakhali court has handed down death sentences to 10 individuals and life imprisonment to six others in connection with the gang-rape of a housewife in Noakhali's Subarnachar in 2018.
The court has imposed a fine of Tk50,000 on the life-term convicts, in defualt, asked them to serve two more years in jail.
The heinous crime was committed as a reprisal after she chose not to vote for a specific candidate in the 11th National Assembly elections.
On the night of the election on December 30, the housewife was gang-raped by the local Ruhul Amin, who tied up her husband and children.
The day after the incident, the husband of the victim filed a case under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at the Charjabbar police station. After the investigation, District Detective Police Inspector Zakir Hossain issued a charge sheet on March 27, 2019, against 16 people including the expelled publicity secretary of Subarnachar Upazila Awami League Ruhul Amin member.
