A court here today sentenced 19 people to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Panchbibi upazila of the district in 2002.
Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 Md. Nurul Islam pronounced the verdict this afternoon, Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Nripendranath Mondal said.
The accused are - Md Alam and Kalam, sons of Kofil Uddin, Md Dola, Osman and Korban, sons of Abdus Shatter, Azadul and Saidul Islam, sons of Abdul Gafur, Md Labu, Babu and Aminur Rahman, sons of Khalil Akand, Faraz Mandal, son of Biraj Uddin, Md Shuktu, son of Sunnat Ali, Md. Ukil, son of Naye Ali, Dulal Hossain and Sanwar, sons of Bharsa Mandal, Alim Hossain and Nazrul Islam, sons of Altaf Ali, Saiful Islam, son of Abdus Sattar Prodhan and Zahurul Islam son of Suleiman Akand. All are residents of Harenda village under Panchbibi upazila of the district.
The court also fined them Taka 50,000 each, in default, to suffer two years more in jail each.
According to the prosecution, the victim and the accused had a conflict over a disputed land. On the night of November 22, 2002, the accused beat victim Abdur Rahman, son of Samsuddin Munsi of Harenda village of the upazila, to death over previous enmity.
The victim's brother Abdul Barik Munsi alias Farooq filed a murder case with Panchbibi Police Station in this connection.
On April 25, 2004, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panchbibi Police Station and the investigating officer of the case Rabiul Islam filed a charge-sheet against the accused in the court.
After examining the record and witnesses, the court found 19 people guilty, PP Nripendranath Mondal added.
