A Dhaka court has sentenced eight individuals to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of police inspector Mamun Imran Khan, who served with the Special Branch (SB) of Bangladesh Police.

Among the convicts is Dubai-based gold trader Rabiul Islam, widely known by his alias Arav Khan, who remains at large along with his wife and fellow convict, Suraiya Akter Keya.

The verdict was delivered on Thursday (17 April) by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib.

The six other convicts are Rahmat Ullah, Swapan Sarker, Mizan Sheikh, Atik Hasan, Sarwar Hasan and Didar Pathan.

Except for Arav Khan and his wife, all the convicts were produced before the court and later sent back to prison following the announcement of the verdict and issuance of sentencing warrants.

Inspector Mamun was murdered on 7 July 2018 in Dhaka’s Banani area.

His body was discovered two days later in a forested area of Gazipur.

On 10 July, his brother Jahangir Alam Khan filed a murder case with Banani Police Station.

Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet on 31 March 2019 accusing eight individuals, including Rabiul Islam, under various aliases such as Apon, Sohag, Hridoy, and Hridi.

The court framed charges and began the trial on 25 November 2021. During proceedings, testimonies were recorded from 26 out of 38 prosecution witnesses.
