Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury urged the businesspeople to refrain from increasing prices of essential items during the Ramadan.

The adviser made the call while talking to reporters after visiting the barracks of Mirpur Police Lines in the capital.

He mentioned that in many Muslim countries, including those in the Middle East, the prices of goods are kept low during Ramadan. But in Bangladesh traders increase the prices of goods during festivals.

"I would like to request the businesspeople not to raise the prices of commodities at this time. During Ramadan, they should keep the prices of goods as low as possible. If this can be done, consumers will be relieved,” he said.

Replying to a question about the monitoring of the price of daily essentials, the adviser said “You have to admit that this time the prices of goods are lower than last time. And if the prices of goods can be controlled without conducting raids, it is even better.”

Referring to the attack on two women in Lalmatia, Jahangir Alam urged people to refrain from smoking in public places and shun eating outside during the day to show respect to the people who fast.

Later the adviser inquired about the quality of the food and iftar items in the barracks and ordered the high officials to make no compromise on the quality of food.
