BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed confidence that a neutral and acceptable election will be held in Bangladesh by December this year.

Speaking at a book unveiling event at Suhrawardy Udyan's Boi Mela on Wednesday afternoon, he stated, "Today, everyone is once again agreeing that, considering the political culture of Bangladesh, there should be a system where a neutral government is in place during the election period. We are moving in that direction. We firmly believe that by December, a neutral election will take place, acceptable to all, ensuring Bangladesh continues on the path of democracy. This will ease the journey towards establishing a democratic state."

Referring to reforms initiated by former president Ziaur Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul remarked, "There was a one-party rule called BAKSAL. From there, he introduced multi-party democracy and a free press. Many have now forgotten this, and the younger generation may not even know that under BAKSAL, all newspapers were shut down. It was Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman who restored press freedom and reinstated fundamental rights."

Highlighting former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia's contributions, he said, "She reinstated parliamentary democracy through reforms and introduced the provision for a caretaker government in the constitution."

Accusing the current regime of distorting history, Mirza Fakhrul alleged, "For the past fifteen years, they have been manipulating history. However, history cannot be forgotten or distorted at will. The truth prevails through free thinking, and the real history always emerges."
