In a remarkable development that could reshape Eastern European geopolitics, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt has indicated that the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict may reach its denouement this week through American diplomatic intervention.
Speaking to journalists at the South Lawn following the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Levitt disclosed that President Trump and his team are intensively engaged in negotiations with both warring parties, reports BBC.
"The President is particularly confident we can bring this to fruition this week," she stated.
The announcement follows Trump's controversial remarks regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whom he suggested should be excluded from future peace negotiations.
This statement has raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles, marking a significant shift in American approach to the conflict.
According to Levitt, National Security Advisor Matt Waltz will be working "round the clock" to secure an agreement this weekend. Simultaneously, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is pursuing discussions regarding a proposed mineral rights agreement with Ukraine, which the administration views as a crucial component of any peace deal.
"These Ukrainian mineral resources represent a vital element for the President," Levitt emphasised, "particularly given their potential to return American tax dollars to our coffers."
The conflict, which began with Russia's military intervention in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, has resulted in substantial casualties and material losses on both sides.
While Trump recently acknowledged Russia's role as the aggressor, he maintained that both Zelenskyy and former President Joe Biden should have taken preventive measures to avert the Russian offensive.
The proposed mineral rights agreement with Ukraine appears to be emerging as a cornerstone of the American-brokered peace initiative, potentially offering a pathway to resolution in a conflict that has destabilised European security for three years.
