The cause of the devastating fire that triggered panic in Khilgaon’s Taltola area on Friday night accompanied by multiple gas cylinder explosions, remained unknown as of Saturday evening.
Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of the damage, though automobile workshop owners claimed that at least 28 vehicles including seven motorbikes were gutted in the blaze.
The fire broke out around 7:30 pm on Friday and was brought under control after nearly two hours of efforts. It was fully extinguished by 1:25 am on Saturday.
Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters’ media cell, said the fire originated in a densely packed garage area behind Khilgaon Police Station.
“The proximity of the garages made it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze initially,” he said.
A total of nine firefighting units were deployed to douse the flames.
Speaking to UNB, residents said multiple gas cylinders exploded as the fire spread though the exact cause is still under investigation
No casualties or injuries have been reported.
During a visit to the site on Saturday noon, UNB found that the affected area, 1407/A Khilgaon Taltola Holding No., was once a playground known as Bhanga Math, where cricket and football were played, and fairs were held during Eid.
After 2008, 21-22 automobile workshops were gradually established there.
While some garages usually remain open on Fridays, all were closed at the time of the fire as their owners were attending a picnic organised by the Bangladesh Automobile Workshop Owners Association, locals said.
Shah Alam, owner of Shah Alam Auto Mobile Electric, said at least 28 vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, and jeeps, in 21 garages were completely destroyed.
Faruk, owner of Faruk Automobile, said two vehicles from his garage were also burnt.
Due to the fire, the area also experienced a temporary power outage.
