Bangladesh has slipped two positions in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index, now ranking 151st globally, while securing the 14th spot among the world’s most corrupt countries.
The information was disclosed by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman during a press conference held at the MIDAS Centre in Dhaka on Tuesday (11 February).
The briefing was convened to mark the release of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024, which has been published annually by Transparency International since 1995, with Bangladesh included in the assessment from 2001.
According to Iftekharuzzaman, in the latest CPI covering the period from November 2021 to September 2024, Bangladesh ranks just above Afghanistan in South Asia in terms of corruption levels.
In stark contrast, Denmark tops the list as the least corrupt country, achieving the highest score of 90.
Expressing deep concern, the TIB executive director remarked that corruption in Bangladesh has reached an alarming stage, with the country increasingly losing its grip on effective control mechanisms.
He underscored the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to address the systemic issues contributing to the nation’s deteriorating integrity standards.
