The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has launched a voluntary buyout scheme as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to restructure and scale back the federal workforce, a spokesperson for the agency has confirmed.
Eligible employees have been offered a severance package comprising eight months of pay and benefits, a model similar to deferred resignation incentives extended to staff in other federal agencies, reports the NBC.
However, certain personnel, including those engaged in high-priority assignments, will be ineligible for the scheme.
"Director Ratcliffe is moving swiftly to ensure the CIA workforce is aligned with the Administration’s national security priorities," the spokesperson stated in an email response.
During his confirmation hearing, Ratcliffe pledged to maintain political neutrality in intelligence-related decisions and assured that loyalty tests would not influence hiring or dismissal practices within the agency.
“These measures form part of a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the agency, create opportunities for emerging leaders, and enhance the CIA’s ability to fulfil its mission,” the spokesperson added.
