US President Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations, warning that any attempt to establish an alternative currency to the US dollar would be met with severe trade penalties.
Meanwhile, the deadline for imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico is fast approaching.
According to AFP, Trump previously stated that if Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—members of the BRICS bloc—move forward with launching a competing currency, the United States would respond with punitive tariffs.
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “The days of simply watching as BRICS nations distance themselves from the dollar are over.”
He further insisted that the bloc must commit to refraining from creating a new BRICS currency or endorsing any alternative to the US dollar. Failure to comply, he warned, would result in a 100% tariff on their exports to the US.
Additionally, Trump asserted that the tariffs would apply if these countries failed to curb illegal immigration or prevent fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
In a separate move, he issued a direct warning to China, a key BRICS member, announcing an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
The latest threats underscore Trump's hardline stance on global trade, setting the stage for potential economic tensions should he return to power.
