The probable date for the upcoming elections will be announced in February, following the recommendations of the Reform Commission’s report, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has stated.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday (29 January), he made the disclosure on behalf of the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Commenting on the political future of Awami League, he alleged that the party was complicit in the July killings but displayed no remorse.
He categorically stated that until those responsible are brought to justice, the Awami League will not be permitted to conduct any political activities.
Addressing the legal actions taken against journalists, the press secretary asserted that the government has not initiated any lawsuits against members of the press; rather, these cases have been filed by victims' families.
He refuted allegations made in a Human Rights Watch report, claiming that it contained inaccuracies and urging the organisation to correct them.
He further assured that all cases against journalists were being resolved expeditiously and that no one was being unjustly harassed.
