Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the Awami League cannot return to the political process unless it acknowledges past human rights violations and removes individuals implicated in crimes.

Taking to his Facebook profile on Wednesday (22 January), Shafiqul Alam stated that Awami League supporters remain deluded in believing the party can reintegrate into the political sphere without addressing its history of crimes.

He underscored that justice must prevail for killings, enforced disappearances, and crimes against humanity committed between 2009 and 2024, alongside trials for associated individuals within the party and its affiliates.

Referring to recent discussions with foreign diplomats and officials, Shafiqul Alam noted that while some called for reconciliation, most emphasised the importance of systemic reforms and restoring institutional integrity over compromises with unrepentant perpetrators of violence.

He further criticised Awami League supporters for allegedly attempting to erase memories of historic atrocities, including the 1974 famine, killings by the Rakkhi Bahini, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s one-party rule.

Shafiqul Alam remarked that the current generation has become more aware of such violations under authoritarian regimes and is actively keeping these historical accounts alive through persistent efforts.
