In 2024, Bangladesh witnessed a staggering 6,927 road accidents resulting in 7,294 fatalities and injuries to 12,019 individuals.
The financial loss due to these accidents is estimated at Tk21,886.32 crore, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation unveiled on Wednesday (8 January).
The report, compiled from monitoring reports published in national, regional, and online newspapers, covers road, rail, and waterway accidents.
Of the road accidents, 6,927 incidents were recorded, resulting in 7,294 deaths and 12,019 injuries.
Among the deceased, 893 were women and 1,152 were children.
Motorcyclists were the worst affected, with 2,761 accidents leading to 2,609 deaths, comprising 35.76% of total fatalities.
Pedestrians accounted for 1,535 deaths, while 984 drivers and their assistants also lost their lives.
Other casualties included 369 bus passengers, 499 passengers in goods-laden vehicles, 363 sedan, microbus, ambulance, and jeep passengers, and 1,392 passengers of three-wheelers such as CNGs and auto-rickshaws.
Additionally, 331 passengers of locally made vehicles and 196 bicycle and rickshaw riders were killed.
The report also covered 118 waterway accidents, resulting in 152 deaths, 161 injuries, and 39 missing persons.
On railways, 347 accidents caused 324 deaths and 277 injuries.
Road Safety Foundation's analysis highlighted that 2,357 accidents occurred on national highways, 2,736 on regional roads, 972 on rural roads, 784 in urban areas, and 78 in other locations.
Dhaka division reported the highest number of accidents, with 1,582 incidents causing 1,840 deaths.
Conversely, Sylhet division saw the fewest, with 435 accidents leading to 443 fatalities.
