Ramos-Horta praises Professor Yunus's contribution in combating global poverty

Visiting Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta has admired the efforts of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to fight poverty globally.

"........ Prof Yunus has done in all his life to leave from poverty and desperation millions of people not only in Bangladesh, (but) all over the world," he said while speaking at a lecture session titled 'Eminent Person's Lecture on Peace in the Contemporary World' on Tuesday.

Mentioning this is his third visit to Bangladesh, Ramos-Horta said it is wonderful how impactful has been the work of Grameenbank and the work of Prof Yunus in addressing poverty.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) arranged the lecture session.

He cited that Grameenbank founder Prof Yunus was invited to Timor-Leste in 2004 to launch microcredit in his country.

In his lecture, he blamed the world leaders that they have failed in conflict prevention.

The Timor-Leste President presented the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, Syria crisis, Israel-Palestine war and Myanmar conflict and the role of the Security Council of the United Nations.

He said that ASAEN can play a vital role to make Asia as a prosperous region. He expected that Timor-Leste is likely to join the regional form by next year.

In his speech, Ramos-Horta, put stress on resolving the long-pending Rohingya crisis to bring stability in the region.

He recalled his struggle for the independence of Timor-Leste and cited that he spent eight years in the Indonesia’s prison.

The Timor-Leste President said that about 97 percent of his country has been brought under electricity coverage.

The life expectancy of people of his country is now over 70 years which was below 60 years in 2002.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain and BIISS Director General Major General Iftekhar Anis also spoke, among others, on the occasion.
