Ekushey Padak-winning Rabindra Sangeet artiste Papia Sarwar passed away on Thursday (12 December) at 8am at a private hospital in Dhaka, succumbing to cancer. She was 68 years old, said her husband, Sarwar Alam.
He informed that her mortal remains will be kept at the BIRDEM mortuary.
Following the Friday prayers, her funeral prayers (janaza) will be held, after which she will be laid to rest at the Banani Cemetery.
Papia Sarwar had been battling cancer for several years.
She had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Tejgaon, Dhaka, for the past five days. Prior to this, she had also undergone treatment at another hospital in the capital.
Her death marks the end of a remarkable legacy as one of the most celebrated exponents of Rabindra Sangeet in Bangladesh.
