The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has withdrawn the decision to increase the price of sugar.
“Price of sugar will not be Tk100 per kg. It will be sold at the previous price of Tk70 per kg,” TCB Spokesperson Humayun Kabir told reporters in an audio message on Thursday (7 March).
TCB had decided to increase the price of sugar on 6 March by Tk30 per kg as the government agency started the sale of essentials at a subsidised price among one crore TCB card-holding families at a subsidised price.
However, due to the criticism of the decision to increase the price of sugar so much, the price hike decision was withdrawn.
When asked about the price increase, TCB Spokesperson Humayun Kabir has said the price of sugar had to be adjusted to reduce the subsidy.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu said the price of sugar will not increase during the month of Ramadan.
“Price of sugar will not increase even by Tk1 during Ramzan,” the state minister said at the opening ceremony of the TCB's product sale programme for the month of March at Tejgaon Polytechnic ground on 7 March.
“There is enough stock of sugar in the market so far. In that case, there is no possibility of a sugar crisis,” he added.
