The much-anticipated US presidential election officially began on Tuesday (5 November), with initial votes cast in the early hours in the small New Hampshire village of Dixville Notch.

Shortly after voting commenced at midnight, the entire process concluded swiftly, revealing an unexpected result - both Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris received an equal number of votes, reports the CNN.

Voting started at 12:10am local time on Monday (5 November) in this quaint village, which boasts fewer than ten eligible voters. Within minutes, voting concluded, and the tally revealed three votes each for Trump and Harris.

In New Hampshire, electoral law permits polling stations in areas with fewer than 100 residents to open from midnight, with polls closing once all registered voters have cast their ballots. The small electorate's votes are then immediately counted.

Most polling stations across the East Coast are expected to open later today at 6-7am local time (equivalent to 5-6pm Bangladesh Standard Time), with voters nationwide heading to the polls throughout the day.
