Students from the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University have taken to the streets to demand independence and recognition as a separate university.

The protest has led to the complete blockage of traffic on Newmarket Road, causing significant congestion in the area.

On Wednesday (23 October) shortly after 12:30pm, students began to gather at the Science Lab intersection in the capital to stage their protest.

As traffic came to a halt, a lengthy traffic jam ensued.

Witnesses reported that students started assembling within Dhaka College from early morning.

As the day progressed, their numbers increased significantly.

By around 12:30pm, the students united, marching out of Dhaka College and occupying the road. They voiced various slogans, demanding recognition as a separate university, among other grievances.

The blockade resulted in severe traffic congestion, prompting many commuters to disembark from vehicles and proceed on foot to reach their destinations.
