Noel Tata has been named as the new chairman of Tata Trusts, effective from 11 October, following the death of his half-brother Ratan Tata on 9 October at the age of 86.

The appointment was unanimously decided during a board meeting held in Mumbai, where the leadership of Tata Trusts, which holds a controlling 66% stake in Tata Sons, was discussed, reports NDTV.

The Trusts play a pivotal role in overseeing the governance of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates.

Ratan Tata, who had long served as chairman of both Tata Trusts and Tata Sons, was a towering figure in Indian business and philanthropy. His decades-long leadership was marked by significant growth and global expansion of the Tata Group.

However, his passing left a leadership vacuum, as he did not have any children nor had he named a successor to take on his responsibilities. This prompted the board to convene and make a crucial decision regarding the future leadership of the Trusts.

Noel Tata, a prominent member of the Tata family and the son of Naval and Simone Tata, is known for his leadership roles within the Tata Group, including his time at Trent, the retail arm of the conglomerate.

His appointment is expected to provide continuity and stability during this time of transition for the group’s philanthropic and business activities.
