A high-level taskforce on the semiconductor sector has been formed to develop a roadmap for sectoral growth, focusing on testing, assembly, and scaling up chip design capabilities.
The taskforce will work with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA).
The decision came from a stakeholder meeting titled “Semiconductors – A New Frontier for the Bangladesh Economy and Employment.”
M Siraz Uddin Miah, Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser at BIDA, chaired the meeting at its Headquarters in the capital on Wednesday, said a press release on Thursday.
The government is moving to form a taskforce with representatives from industry, academics and the diaspora for the development of this sector, said Siraz Uddin Miah.
He added that the government will identify barriers and recommend actionable solutions in this regard.
He called on the stakeholders to leverage BIDA as a one-stop platform to align government policies and priorities.
Mashuque Rahman, Founder of Green Quest, in his keynote presentation, highlighted the priority areas within the semiconductor value chain and recommendations for growth.
Bangladesh now generates about $6 million annually from semiconductor activities, mainly through integrated circuit design services, said Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of BIDA and BEZA.
He added that the next steps will focus on policy development, promotion, and capacity building.
Mohammed Enayetur Rahman, Founder and CEO of ULKASEMI, said they are willing to engage with university students to help them understand the job description.
