Barrister Tureen Afroz, a former prosecutor at Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, was arrested on the night of 7 April in Dhaka’s Uttara area.
Police conducted a raid after 10pm at a residence on Road 11, Sector 3 of Uttara, and took Afroz into custody, according to Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman of Uttara West Police Station.
Afroz was arrested in connection with a murder case tied to an anti-discrimination protest, Rahman said. He added that, in addition to the charges filed at Uttara West, several other cases are pending against her in Nilphamari.
The arrest operation at her home reportedly began around 10pm and continued for some time before she was taken into custody.
Tureen Afroz was appointed as a prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal in February 2013. During her tenure, she led prosecution efforts against top Jamaat-e-Islami figures, including Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Ghulam Azam, on charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
However, in November 2019, she was dismissed from her role following allegations of a clandestine meeting with an accused in a war crimes case in 2018.
