A gang of armed assailants shot a gold trader and made off with gold ornaments weighing 200 bhori and Tk1 lakh in cash in the Banasree area under Rampura police station on Sunday night.
The incident occurred at around 10:30pm in front of House No. 20 on Road No. 7, Block D, Banasree.
The injured businessman, identified as 43-year-old Anwar Hossain, was later rescued by locals and rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at approximately midnight, said Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand.
Duty Officer Md Mohsin stated, “A police patrol team was dispatched upon hearing reports of a man being shot in the hand and leg during a street holdup. Senior officers, including the OC, are at the scene. Preliminary information suggests the victim is a gold trader.”
Eyewitnesses and footage captured on mobile phones from a nearby building, which went viral on social media, reveal that three men on a motorcycle intercepted Anwar. As he resisted their attempt to snatch his bag, one of the assailants opened fire, wounding him. The perpetrators then seized the bag and fled on their motorcycle.
Relatives of Anwar stated that the bag contained 200 bhori of gold jewellery and Tk1 lakh in cash. They suspect that the robbers had been tailing him from his shop before striking just as he arrived near his residence.
