A master plan will be taken to restore 19 canals in Dhaka to resolve the waterlogging problem, said Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Sunday.

The plan aims to mitigate waterlogging in different areas including Dhanmondi and Malibagh, she said at an inter-ministerial meeting at Nagar Bhaban.

"The project will be implemented through a month-based action plan. Besides, owners of high-rise buildings must ensure proper waste management to prevent pollution," she said.

The environment adviser stressed the need for regular dredging and maintaining water flow alongside long-term measures.

"Effective coordination among agencies concerned and strict monitoring is crucial. The government is committed to preventing encroachment and ensuring proper management of canals and water bodies," she added.

The meeting, presided over by Local Government Division Secretary Md Nizam Uddin, focused on resolving waterlogging, reclaiming canals and water bodies, and removing illegal structures, said a press release.

Among others, Water Resources Ministry Secretary Nazmul Ahsan, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Ejaz, and Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia attended the meeting.
