Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have called for an increased deployment of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the country’s borders to reinforce national security, alongside enhanced measures to secure the nation’s waterways.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury explained that the recommendations emerged from discussions held during the third day of the Deputy Commissioners’ Conference, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture.
“The primary focus of our session was to improve law and order while advancing the agricultural sector,” he said.
“The Deputy Commissioners have proposed deploying more BGB personnel in border areas, increasing the presence of river police along waterways, and augmenting manpower in the Gazipur Metropolitan and Industrial Police units. These issues are currently under close review, and we will ensure that the necessary steps are taken.”
Although the overall law-and-order situation remains satisfactory, Alam acknowledged that there is room for improvement. “Ongoing law enforcement operations are strengthening security, and nationwide efforts such as ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ are being implemented to maintain this progress,” he added.
Alam also emphasized that corruption is the most pressing challenge facing the country. “If corruption is not eradicated at its roots, our desired progress will remain unachievable. It is crucial to curb corruption at all levels,” he stated, noting that Deputy Commissioners have received clear instructions to address the issue.
The conference, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid, was attended by senior officials including Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser; Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani; Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian; Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam BPM; and various departmental heads from both ministries.
