A Dhaka court has granted bail to actress Pori Moni after she surrendered a day following the issuance of an arrest warrant in connection with a case alleging assault and death threats.

Appearing before the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Monday (27 January), Pori Moni submitted a bail petition, which was subsequently approved, her lawyer Nilanjana Rifaat informed the media.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Zunaid passed the order.

The arrest warrant had been issued on 26 January after the court formally framed charges against Pori Moni in a case filed by businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmood.

The actress had failed to appear before the court, prompting the issuance of the warrant.

The court also framed charges against Pori Moni's costume designer, Junayed Bogdadi alias Jimmy, in the same case and issued an arrest warrant against him as well.

According to case documents, Nasir Uddin Mahmood lodged a complaint with the Dhaka court on 18 July 2022, alleging that Pori Moni and her associates assaulted him and attempted to murder him at Savar's Boat Club.

The businessman claimed that on 8 June 2021, the actress entered the club to use the washroom and later consumed alcohol.

As she was leaving around 1:15am, she allegedly demanded a complimentary bottle of Blue Label whisky.

Upon his refusal, she reportedly verbally abused him and hurled a glass at him, striking his head and chest.

In a counterclaim, Pori Moni filed a case against Nasir and six others at Savar police station on the same day (8 June 2021), alleging attempted rape and murder at Dhaka Boat Club in Birulia, Savar.

Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Nasir and three others on 6 September 2022. The Dhaka Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-9 framed charges against the accused on 18 May 2022, and the case is currently at the evidence-recording stage.

Meanwhile, Pori Moni is also embroiled in a separate narcotics case alongside two others, which is being heard at Dhaka's Special Judge Court-10. This case, too, is at the evidence-recording stage.
