The DMP said in a statement on Sunday that the police have arrested two individuals in connection with the brutal attempted murder of businessman Ehteshamul Haque in the capital's Elephant Road, near Newmarket, on Friday night.
The arrested individuals are identified as Asiful Haque Asif, alias Jhantu, 32, and Mohammad Kawser Mirdha, 24.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 10:40 PM on 10 January 2025, near ECS Computer City (Multiplan Centre) on Elephant Road. A group of assailants armed with knives and other sharp weapons attacked Ehteshamul Haque, a businessman at ECS Computer City, injuring him severely. During the attack, Mohammad Wahidul Hasan Dipu, president of the Elephant Road Computer Samity, was also assaulted by the same group as he was leaving the building in his car.
The victim, Ehteshamul Haque, was admitted to Popular Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Later, a case was filed at Newmarket police station, based on a complaint by Mohammad Wahidul Hasan Dipu, accusing 10 named and 20-25 unnamed individual assailants.
According to the case details, the accused had been extorting money from the businesses in Multiplan Centre since 5 August. When the victims, Ehteshamul and Dipu, resisted the extortion, the perpetrators resorted to threats and harassment. In retaliation for their opposition to the extortion activities, the accused allegedly planned and carried out the attack with the intent to kill.
Following the registration of the case, Newmarket police intensified efforts to arrest those involved in the attack. Using CCTV footage, intelligence, and technological support, police made a breakthrough in the investigation. At 12 PM on Sunday (12 January 2025) a team led by Assistant Police Commissioner Tariq Latif from Newmarket zone arrested Kawser Mirdha from Jagannath Saha Road. Later, at 1 PM, Asiful Haque Asif, alias Jhantu, was apprehended from a hideout near Hazaribagh Girls' School. Jhantu is the third named accused in the case.
Authorities have confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, and efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the incident continue.
