A Dhaka court has placed Awami League Advisory Council member and former minister Amir Hossain Amu on a six-day remand in connection with the murder case of businessman Abdul Wadud, who was killed during anti-discrimination student protests in the capital’s New Market area.

On Thursday (7 November), Amu was brought before the court. The investigation officer, Jahangir Arif, Police Inspector of the Detective Branch's Ramna Zonal Team, sought a ten-day remand for further investigation.

The state prosecutor argued in favour of the remand, while the defence lawyers sought to have it cancelled and requested bail.

Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Imran Ahmed granted the six-day remand.

Earlier, on 6 November, Amu was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) from Dhanmondi.

Reports indicate that Amu faces 15 different cases, including charges of murder. He was previously known as the coordinator of the 14-party alliance.

According to case details, on the afternoon of 19 July, during the anti-discrimination student movement, Abdul Wadud died of gunshot wounds in the Nilkhet area under New Market Police Station.

Subsequently, Wadud’s brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, filed a murder case against 130 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

Prior to this, on 18 August, the bank accounts of Amu, a former Member of Parliament for Jhalokathi-2, were frozen, along with the accounts of his children and their businesses.

Following news of Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country on 5 August, protesters set fire to Amu’s residence in Jhalokathi.

Law enforcement officials later recovered approximately Tk5 crore in local and foreign currency from the property.

Amir Hossain Amu, a former leader of the Chhatra League in the 1960s, was elected to the Provincial Assembly from Barisal in the 1970 elections.

He was subsequently elected as an MP five times after the country's independence.
