Two garment workers were killed and three others severely injured when a speeding goods truck struck them on the Gazipur section of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

"The incident occurred at around 2pm on Tuesday (10 September), in the Harinhati area of Kaliakoir Upazila, along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway. The deceased were employed at the Sterling factory in the area," said Naowajore Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahadat Hossain.

Following the incident, enraged workers have detained the truck, set it ablaze, and blocked the road.

According to local police, the accident happened when workers from a factory were crossing the Dhaka-Tangail Highway during their lunch break. A goods truck, travelling recklessly towards northern Bangladesh, hit the workers, instantly killing two on the spot and leaving three others critically injured.

The injured were promptly taken to hospital in critical condition.
