An ordinance has been issued to repeal the "Father of the Nation's Family Protection Act 2009", which was enacted to ensure the security of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family members.

The repeal ordinance was signed by President  Mohammed Shahbiddin on Monday (9 September).

Prior to this, the draft ordinance received final approval during a meeting of the advisory council on 29 August.

According to the previous government's decision, the "Father of the Nation's Family Protection Act 2009 (Act No. 63 of 2009)" was enacted and enforced. Subsequently, on 15 May 2015, a gazette was issued to provide special security and privileges to the family under this law.

The act was designed to offer state-sponsored special benefits to only one family, a clear example of discrimination.

The current interim government, which came to power following the anti-discriminatory student uprising, has taken a firm stance to eliminate all forms of inequality. The ordinance was necessary, as Parliament had been dissolved, requiring immediate action to repeal the law.

During the Advisory Council meeting, the draft 'Father of the Nation's Family Security (Repeal) Ordinance 2024' was finalised, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

On 5 August, during the "March to Dhaka" movement organised by student protesters against discrimination, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India.

The cabinet was subsequently dissolved. On 6 August, the president dissolved the 12th National Parliament. An interim government was formed on 8 August.
