US shows positive signs on Bangladesh's GSP privileges: Commerce adviser

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed expressed optimism that the United States is favourably considering granting GSP benefits to Bangladesh, as part of efforts to diversify export products and maintain export growth

United States (US) is showing a positive outlook on providing generalised system of preferences (GSP) facilities to Bangladesh, said Commerce and Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

Following the 146th meeting of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the 59th meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute at the secretariat on Sunday (8 September), the adviser hopes to receive GSP privileges, Dr Salehuddin said, "The United States is positive about granting GSP facilities to Bangladesh."

Regarding the previous fiscal year, Dr Salehuddin noted that export earnings witnessed a 12.4% growth. He also mentioned that measures have been initiated to avoid discrepancies in export data moving forward.

Highlighting the need to reduce dependence on a few key products, he emphasised the importance of diversifying the range of exportable goods.

Additionally, Dr Salehuddin announced that the next trade fair is scheduled to commence in January of the coming year.
