Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour across nine regions of the country by midday.

In a weather alert issued on Sunday (8 September), the department stated that regions including Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mymensingh, and Sylhet may experience temporary gusts or squalls from the south or southeast at speeds between 45 and 60 km/h, along with rain or thunderstorms.

Consequently, river ports in these areas have been instructed to hoist cautionary signal number one.

Additionally, another weather bulletin reports that a low-pressure system over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay has intensified into a well-marked low and is moving northwards.

This system is expected to develop into a depression by Sunday.

BMD further noted that the differential air pressure in the northern Bay of Bengal may cause gusty or squally winds in coastal regions and at sea ports. All maritime ports in the country have been instructed to display cautionary signals.

In a separate advisory signed by meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra sea ports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three.

Furthermore, fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
