On 7 September 1822, Prince Pedro I, the son of King John VI of Portugal, declared Brazil’s independence, marking a turning point in the nation's history. This event, known as "Dia da Independência" (Independence Day), ended over three centuries of colonial rule by Portugal.

The declaration came after mounting tensions between Brazil and Portugal, as the Brazilian elite pushed for greater autonomy.

Pedro I, who was acting as regent in Brazil, famously proclaimed independence by stating "Independência ou Morte!" ("Independence or Death!") near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo. This bold move set the stage for Brazil to become an independent empire, with Pedro I as its first emperor.

The moment is celebrated annually as a symbol of Brazil's sovereignty and the birth of a new nation.
