On 7 September 1940, the German air force launched a series of heavy bombing raids on London, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and leaving many more injured.
According to the Ministry of Home Security, the scale of these attacks was the largest the Germans had attempted so far.
The first wave of raids began in the late afternoon, primarily targeting the densely populated East End and areas along the river near London's docks.
Approximately 300 bombers attacked the city for over an hour and a half, setting the entire docklands area ablaze as numerous fires illuminated the night sky.
As darkness fell, the flames were visible from more than 10 miles away, likely guiding a second wave of German bombers that arrived around 8:30 pm BST (7:30 pm GMT).
The relentless night bombing lasted for more than eight hours, with the deafening sound of explosions shaking the city. Bombs fell in such rapid succession that there was barely a pause between them.
