The interim government has issued a public warning to maintain law and order across the country.

"On 5 August 2024, following the fall of the authoritarian government due to the 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,' an interim government assumed power. The ousted government resorted to brutal force in an attempt to suppress the uprising, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries. Prolonged misrule has led to widespread incidents of abduction, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings, causing deep resentment among the public towards the previous regime. The interim government is resolute in its commitment to bringing the perpetrators of these abuses to justice," said a notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday (3 September).

The notification further mentioned, "It is with concern that the government observes some overly enthusiastic and self-serving groups attempting to take the law into their own hands. These groups are engaging in activities such as besieging institutions, forcing resignations, vandalism, arson, unlawful searches, looting, extortion, and pressuring the police to file indiscriminate cases. They are also attacking accused individuals in court, thereby attempting to create instability. The government wishes to reassure everyone that being implicated in a case does not automatically lead to arbitrary arrests. Each case will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken accordingly."

The warning also made it clear that "The government will take appropriate legal action against activities that disrupt public safety. A crackdown on all miscreants, regardless of their political affiliation, will be initiated shortly, and legal measures will be enforced without bias."

The notification concluded by stating, "Anyone with a complaint should report it to higher authorities and relevant offices. Under no circumstances should any institution be besieged or any form of violent behaviour be exhibited. The government will ensure that existing laws are strictly adhered to in searches and case filings, and steps will be taken to eliminate harassment."

The public has been earnestly urged to cooperate with the government in maintaining law and order.
