Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has urged the media to report any errors or shortcomings of the interim administration without reservation, said prominent journalist and The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam.

"Dr Yunus had personally intervened to secure the release of 57 Bangladeshis who were imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates for participating in protests in solidarity with the quota reform movement," he said following Dr Yunus's meeting with media editors at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday (3 September).

This intervention, Anam noted, was a significant and positive development.

Mahfuz Anam further stated that the editors participating in the discussion had expressed full support for the interim government's actions.

He emphasised a collective desire for a new beginning for Bangladesh, and raised concerns about the assurance of journalists' safety, urging an end to the arbitrary filing of murder cases against them.

He stressed that while journalists should be held accountable for corruption, they should not be targeted in such a manner.

Additionally, Mahfuz Anam expressed a wish for national unity in Bangladesh, highlighting the political fragmentation within the nation.

He called for several critical reforms from the government, including amendments to the constitution, autonomy for institutions, strengthening of anti-corruption and human rights bodies, and comprehensive reforms to the Election Commission to ensure it genuinely reflects the nation’s and voters’ interests.

He also advocated for the autonomy of state-controlled media outlets such as BSS, BTV, and Radio.
