The government will initiate a joint operation to recover illegal firearms from midnight Wednesday, with a focus on enforcing control over drug lords and ensuring security for the upcoming Durga Puja festival

The government's efforts to tackle the proliferation of illegal weapons are set to intensify with a major joint operation scheduled to commence from 4 September, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

"The operation aims to recover illegal firearms across the country," he said during a press briefing at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday (3 September).

He emphasised the need to control drug lords as a crucial step in curbing drug-related crimes, underscoring that the government's approach will continue along these lines.

Additionally, the home adviser assured that security arrangements will be heightened in preparation for the upcoming Durga Puja festival, addressing concerns about public safety during the celebrations.

He also noted ongoing issues at the Myanmar border, promising strengthened law and order in the area.

According to statistics, there are approximately 50,000 legal firearms in the country.

As of Monday (2 September), 3,880 firearms of various types had been recovered, leaving over 46,000 still unaccounted for.

The deadline for the surrender of these weapons is 3 September.
