Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecasted short-term flooding in certain regions of the country during September.

Additionally, moderate thunderstorms are expected in the northern and central regions, BMD said in its long-term forecast issued on Sunday (1 September).

Furthermore, one or two mild heatwaves, with temperatures ranging between 36-38 degrees Celsius, may occur this month.

The weather office has indicated that "normal rainfall" is likely in September.

However, within this period, there remains a possibility of one or two mild heatwaves.

Earlier this year, heavy rainfall and upstream water surges triggered floods in the northeastern region during the second half of June, marking the onset of the monsoon.

Residents of Sylhet, Sunamganj, and surrounding districts faced significant hardship for two weeks before and after the Eid festival.

During that time, rising waters also submerged low-lying areas in the northern region.

In early July, another bout of flooding affected the northern and northeastern regions of the country due to upstream water surges, inundating many villages.

Most recently, on 20 August, severe floods ravaged several districts in the southern and northeastern parts of the country, spurred by intense upstream water surges amid very heavy rainfall.

The floods quickly spread to Feni, Comilla, Chattogram, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur, and Cox's Bazar.

BMD noted that moderate thunderstorms could occur for two to three days in the northern and central regions of the country during September.

Additionally, light thunderstorms could be experienced across the country for three to five days.

One or two mild heatwaves (36-38 degrees Celsius) are expected this month, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures potentially being slightly higher than usual.

The weather office has also warned that due to heavy rainfall, short-term flood situations could develop in some areas of the northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions of the country.
