More than 1,000 people have been killed, and nearly 400 have lost their eyesight amid the violence that erupted during the recent movement that ultimately led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's regime, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday (29 August).
Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum stated that the government would assume full responsibility for the families of those killed during the anti-discrimination student protests and provide free medical treatment to the injured.
She further noted that many have lost vision in one eye, while others have become completely blind.
"We have been in communication with an American organisation called Seva. We have sent a list of those who have become blind or developed vision problems to Seba Foundation. The foundation has assured us that they will bring in doctors as soon as possible to provide treatment. These patients will receive care at Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute, National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital, Chittagong Eye Hospital, and Dinajpur," she added.
The health adviser also mentioned efforts to bring in a team of doctors from abroad for specialised treatment.
"Many have suffered leg injuries, and some have even had to undergo amputations. We are in discussions with various donor agencies, including the World Bank," she added.
