The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has reported that eleven districts across the country have been affected by the ongoing floods, with the number of people impacted reaching 57 lakh.
"In these districts, a total of 23 people have lost their lives due to the flooding," Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Kamrul Hasan said during a press conference on Monday (26 August).
He stated that while there is no shortage of relief materials, a lack of coordination has hindered the distribution of aid to all affected areas.
According to the secretary, the flash floods have particularly impacted the districts of Feni, Cumilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Laxmipur, and Cox's Bazar.
In these eleven districts, 1.25 million families are currently trapped by floodwaters, bringing the total number of affected individuals to 57 lakh.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board released a report on Monday, indicating that there has been no significant rainfall in the past 24 hours in the eastern districts of Cumilla, Brahmanbaria, and Feni, particularly in the areas bordering the Indian state of Tripura and within the Tripura basin.
This has resulted in a continued decline in water levels in the upstream rivers.
Consequently, the existing flood situation in the low-lying areas of Feni and Cumilla districts is gradually improving.
Similarly, the water levels in the rivers of Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts have receded below the danger level.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the eastern region and the adjacent upstream areas within the next 24 hours.
During this time, the water level of the Gomti River in Comilla is likely to decrease, leading to further improvement in the flood situation in this region.
The flood situation in the low-lying areas of Feni district is also expected to improve over the next 24 hours, although some areas may remain stable.
