Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has said that the timing of the election is a political decision and not within the scope of his interim government.
Speaking in a televised address on Sunday evening, Dr. Yunus said that people will decide how long this interim govern will remain in power.
Dr. Yunus said, "Everyone is interested to know when our government will go. The answer to this is in your hands, not ours. We have assumed this role in response to the calls of students during the national crisis, and we are committed to fulfilling this duty with all our strength."
He reiterated that the decision on election timing is entirely political and outside their purview.
"We came into this role at the request of students, who are our primary appointing authorities. The general public supports the appointment, and we will keep this in mind to avoid sudden questions about our departure. When you say we should leave, we will go," he said.
Dr. Yunus outlined the interim government's commitment to various reforms, including strengthening local government institutions and decentralising power.
He assured that his administration is focused on necessary reforms across several sectors—administration, judiciary, election commission, law and order—to ensure free, fair, and participatory elections.
He urged the public to engage in discussions about the essential tasks that need to be completed and stressed that while political decisions will emerge from political discussions, the interim government will not propose an extension of its tenure.
"We seek your blessings and hope to address the country's crisis effectively during our tenure. We are committed to ensuring that the sacrifices made by students and the public are not in vain. We pledge to honour this opportunity to build a new Bangladesh," he added.
Dr. Yunus reaffirmed the interim government's dedication to realising the aspirations of the new generation and pledged to work towards a responsible political arrangement to tackle corruption, looting, and violence.
