Nurul Amin, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), has stepped down after the employees of the commission staged protest demanding his resignation.
He submitted his resignation letter to the President, effective from 20 August, citing personal reasons.
Nurul Amin was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission on 22 March 2023.
On 14 August, the officials and employees of the commission submitted a memorandum to the Chief Advisor, highlighting various irregularities and inconsistencies within the Commission. On 13 August, in a joint meeting, the officials and employees issued an ultimatum demanding the resignation of the Chairman and the members of the Commission.
The employees have been on strike since 18 August, demanding the resignation of the Chairman and members. Even the drivers and office assistants of the Chairman and members joined the protest, with drivers stopping their services from 19 August. Although the Chairman and members managed to attend the office on August 19, they were not seen in the office on 20 August.
On 20 August, all levels of officials and employees staged a sit-in protest by locking the main gate of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC). On this day, the offices of the Chairman and the three members were found locked as they did not come to the office.
