Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party's chairperson Khaleda Zia will be sent abroad soon for advanced medical treatment.

"For advanced medical treatment Begum Zia would be taken abroad," he said during a prayer session held at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan to mark Khaleda Zia's 80th birthday on Friday morning (16 August).

Earlier, the BNP announced that nationwide prayers and milad mahfils would be held in observance of Khaleda Zia’s 80th birthday and to honour those who lost their lives during the student-led protests against the Awami League government.

This information was disclosed in a press release issued on Tuesday by the BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The statement further mentioned that in protest against what the BNP described as the "genocide" conducted by the "fascist" Sheikh Hasina regime and to demand justice for these atrocities, the party would hold sit-in programmes on 14 and 15 August in front of its central and district offices across the country.

On 16 August, special prayers would be offered in mosques, temples, and other places of worship, seeking blessings for Khaleda Zia and the martyrs of the recent movements.
